How To Feel Gratitude
Museum of Natural History in Los Angeles, CA
I’m sick.
You can have hundreds of problems in life. Until you have a health problem. Then you really have one problem.
Reminder: Live on your own by leaving once in a while. Touch grass, and I really mean it go lay on it. Wake up early enough that you feel dew. Feel sun on your face. Go camping. Go climb a mountain. Go swim and get tossed by the Pacific. Realize you need very little but your life depends on those few things. Feel self sufficient. Look up at the stars and realize you are made of starlight. A whole person that is many things. Magic is everywhere but it’s hard to explain. There are so many normal things that are magical: Taking your socks off after a long day. Pajamas. Sleeping in your own bed after being away. Waking up refreshed. Running on the weekends with no time in mind. Feeling out of breath. Mild aching, but feeling stronger. Live saxophone from an unknown source. Seeing children by the water. Looking up at the bridge and thinking how many people helped build such a thing. Overhearing strangers sharing acts of love. The elderly striking up a convo. The familiar path home. The fresh feeling after a shower. Coincidences. Birthdays. Tell people you care. We leave so much unsaid until the goodbyes. A cool bubbly sip. Hearing an old loved song on the radio. Eating when you’re hungry. Savoring every bite. Getting to pick groceries. A phone call walk when it’s cool out. The fact that sunsets happen everyday. A family member’s voice. Hearing rain patter while inside. And a slow thundering.
I get to do this. I get to live life this way. I get to be sick.
