Dressing to your Body Type

Your proportions
I’m a huge believer in dressing however you want. However, there is a reality in how your body works. Know your proportions, and then dress for them.
The fashion world has invented solutions to all these proportional traits to accentuate or diminish certain features. However perfect as it may seem, your favorite celebrities/models are very good at proportions (or at least their stylist is). Let’s dig into this:
1. Height (Short):
2. Short legs
3. Long torso:
4. Big thighs
Shapeshifting
High-waisted pants. Increase perceived leg length.
Pleats. Cut up the leg into two (or three)
A-line: flare out at hips, creates illusion on smaller legs bc loose
Wide leg: especially with boots or heels, engulfs leg
Skinny: enhances shape of legs
Narrow hips: v-hem makes your hips wider
Boot cut
Flare
Shoulders:
- Higher neckline - makes broader shoulders
- Narrow / smaller Neckline - makes broader shoulders
- Wide neckline - shrinks and makes shoulders smaller
- Low neckline - shrinks and makes shoulders smaller
- E.g.
- Shorten: V neck, wide round, square neckline, one shoulder, scoop, simple cuttings or patterns around neck/chest area, oversized collars, epaluttes, shoulder seams that lean inwards, no shoulder seam
- Broaden: Jewel, straight across, complex cuttings or patterns around neck area, oversized puffy short sleeves, shoulder seam that leans outwards, sleeve styles (puff, cap, frill, flutter, mutton leg, off the shoulder, shoulder pads), small, structured collars
- E.g. Sloped shoulders should NOT do:
- oversized, drop shoulders
- Instead do structured shape to shoulder area
- Inward seams
- Intricate designs or cuttings
- Puritan collar
- Large Traps
- To deemphasize:
- Narrow V neck polo blouse, narrow square neckline, halter tops
- Do not do: Rectangular neckline, boat neckline
- Avoid tight neck: Tight fitting turtleneck or knitted sweater
to add curves
- High waisted Skirts or pants add
- Aline skirt or short or pleats
- Tight fitting long skirt is not good
- Straight cut or wide leg
- Belts
- Tops that skim mid section, right below bust
- NecklinesL Scoop, jewel, sweet heart, off shoulder v neck
- Dress with high waisted, avoid boxes or baggy
Belly
- Tuck in stomach for pictures
- Avoid stretchable skirt
Widen Hips
- Loose cut pants
- Straight cut, relaxed, boyfriend
- No
- Flare skirt (midi, pleated)
- No tight fitting or darker colors (reduce bottom)
- Skinny / tight pants need blazer or cardigan
Skinny decrease attention from hips
- Relaxed fit pants around hips/tights
- Better drapes
- Blazer or cardigan
- Pull edges of blose from sides
- Darker colors
- Do not get overly loose (no wide leg)
- Do not accentuate hip
Distance from front/back should not be more than 2CM. Need more room around crotch
Yoke -
Waistline dart
Thicker calves
- Side slide
- Sandals (increase feet skin area -> longer legs)
- Cropped t-shirt
- Straight pants with relaxed fit cut
- A-line or flare skirt
- Lenght that hems at calves
- Platform shoes
⅓ ratios
- Shift Waistline
- Cropped tops
- Tuck in shirt
- Match with high waisted bottoms
- Longer top? Wear short skirts
- Longer bottom - tops that end above hip region
- Shorter tops + short bottoms work too
- Longer top and longer bottom? Wear same color (suit)
- Shoes with similar color palette as pants work too
- 7-8 cropped (ankle cannot be covered)
- Floor length
- Heels or trumpy loafers
- Fluid fabrics makes body look leaner
- Pointed toe or square top pumps also work
