How do I feel fulfilled

A blog post won’t change your career path radically (hopefully), but, hopefully, can give insight to finding your path. Here are general principles compiled from fellow Trojan alums:

Principles

1. Do what you excel at

a. An extremely clique statement, but many truly do not believe in their passions because of predicted financial instability, ostracization from peers, or fear of failure. Instead of thinking about what you’re good at, think about what you can become good at in the next 10-20 years. You’ll find more personal satisfaction doing things you find add value to the world. Put in work to learn from your education.

2. Explore your passions

a. If you think you’re not uniquely good at anything, explore, explore, explore. There’s a stigma against not knowing exactly what you want to do for the next 15 years, but I guarantee you no one truly understands exactly where life will take them. College is a unique time to find yourself and you should do that. Try new things. Don’t be afraid to drop things too!

3. Figure out what you care about.

a. Most students want to have a positive impact with their career. Dealing with creating a better world can sound daunting, but finding out what drives you to impact others is extremely important in finding what you want to do. Engage in events on campus, join student groups, talk to students about what guides them.

4. Map out what your interests are

a. You don’t need to derive all your passions and fulfillment from work. Following your passion is good advice, but misleading. Think about how you can work in your hobbies, lifestyle, and meaning along with what job you might want. Think about it. Are there things that don’t feel like work to you?

5. The world is malleable

a. Your dream job may seem impossible. There are too many things you don’t have or can do. But there’s nothing stopping you. Reach out to Trojan alums, ask for advice, grab coffee and pick their brain! The Trojan Family is real and out there, but it won’t just hand you a job!
